First Day of College

What to Bring

What you bring to class is completely your preference. One semester, I used individual binders for each of my classes. I liked doing this because everything was very organized. The con to this was that the binders took up a lot of space. One other thing that I have tried is using one binder for all my classes happening on a certain day. This took up less space, but got a little bit unorganized. Now, I use different colored notebooks and folders for each class. I like this the best because the notebooks take up very little space and the folders allow me to keep everything organized.

Use a Planner

A planner is a really great thing to have and planners keep you very organized. I write all of my assignments in planners as well as events happening each day. It’s good to get in the habit of writing all important things down in order to keep track of everything that needs to be done.

I love planners like these because they have a month calendar and a daily calendar. My brother got me this planner and I love it!

Snacks

If you have multiple classes in a row, bring quick snacks that you can eat on the way to class. I usually get snacks that are prepackaged so that I can easily have a snack while I am walking from one class to another.

These are some of my favorite prepackaged snacks!

Plan Time for Homework

Once you have your schedule for your classes, find blocks of time where you can study and do your homework. Another tip I have found when it comes to homework is find a spot that works for you. For me, it’s really difficult to study in my room because there are a lot of distractions. The library or outside are places where I can best do my homework and study, but this differs for everyone.

The Phone…

Having my phone right next to me makes it really hard to focus on my homework. Sometimes, I shut it off all the way. Sometimes, I place it far away from me so that I am not tempted to pick it up or look at it. There are also apps that you can get that help you stay focused and not look at your phone. One app that I have found helps me stay focused is called Flora. I use it every time I want to study without the distraction of my phone.

Books are EXPENSIVE

Buying books can get really expensive, really fast. I have found a few tips that save me a lot of money on books. One is simply asking around. There have been a few times when my friends have had books for classes that I can borrow. Also, a lot of people who took the class before sell their books for really cheap. Another option is to rent the books on Amazon. Renting books is a lot cheaper than buying them. I like to rent books because when I buy a book for a class, I use it for the class and then it just sits in my basement and I never open it again. When you rent books, you simply mail it back to Amazon at the end of the semester. This means you won’t have books stacked up in your house that you’ll never use. Lastly, buying used books saves a lot of money. I’ve found a lot of used books on Amazon that have saved me over $100. Sometimes, when you buy used books, there is some writing in the book from the previous owner, but personally, I don’t mind a little extra writing in the book when I’m saving that much money. I also recommend waiting to get the book until the professor says you need it, because sometimes, they’ll tell you that you don’t need the book at all.
