I have gotten highlights in my hair for the past couple summers. I love the way it looks, but dying your hair obviously can get expensive. I had seen a lot about a product by Sun Bum that is supposed to lighten your hair over time. I thought it was worth a shot. I have been using it for a little over a month now and here’s what I think.
Price
I got this product at Target and it is called Sun Bum Blonde Formula Hair Lightener and I got it for $14.99. At first, I wasn’t sure if it was worth it because the bottle is pretty small. But, you don’t need to use a lot of it so it lasts a while. Like I said before, I have had it for about a month and there’s still a ton of product left.
What is It?
This product is paraben free, vegan and cruelty free. Basically, what it does is brightens your hair by using the natural effects from the sun. Not only this, but it also helps protect your hair against frizz and humidity. You can use this spray on natural hair or on color treated hair.
How to Use
This product is super easy to use. Before you go outside in the sun, you just spray it all over your hair (or on sections of your hair if you want more defined highlights). Then, just go outside and let the lightener work its magic. You can use this on damp or dry hair.
Results
I started to notice results pretty quickly after I started using this product. Every time that I use it, I have noticed that my hair has gotten lighter. Other people have also commented on how my hair does look lighter than before.
As you can see, my hair did get gradually lighter using Sun Bum. Now, if you have brown hair, your hair most likely isn’t going to turn full blonde after using this product. Also, you are probably going to be disappointed if you are expecting your hair to go from brown to blonde. Keep in mind that this is a $15 product and is not a $100 salon trip. But, if you want to change up your look and add a bit of blonde, this should do the trick.
Warning
There is a warning on the bottle that you should not use this product more than 1 time in between washes. I read some reviews and heard from people that this product made their hair turn an orange color. I assume that if you use it too much, this could happen to you. I have never used it more than once between washes. I only wash my hair a few times a week, so I only use this product when I know I am going to be sitting outside for a while. So, just be careful that you are not using the product too much because you could experience some problems with your hair color. Again, I only know this from reading reviews, but I have not experienced this problem personally.
Overall Thoughts
I love this product. I really do think that it works and I would recommend it if you are looking to lighten up your hair for the summer months, as long as you are careful with how often you use it. I will keep using it throughout the summer and really like how my hair has looked.

I may try this on my hair as I do have natural lighter highlights.
