Why you should pick your own tulips this spring

Fresh flowers add so much vibrance to any room they are placed in. Of course, you can purchase indoor plants, or create a bouquet with store bought plants to place in your home, but there’s just something about picking the flowers yourself that makes them more special.

There are tons of “U-Pick” farms throughout the country. At these farms, you can pick your own flowers to take home with you.

I went to a farm like this for the first time this weekend with a few close friends and we had such a great time.

Before you pick a flower, be certain it is one you want. Once you pick it, it’s yours to keep.

An activity like this makes for the perfect girl’s day or springtime date. It’s also a family-friendly activity you can do with your kids.

Every one of these is different, but popular examples of “U-Pick” farms are ones where you can pick sunflowers, tulips or different kinds of berries. Just be mindful with whatever “U-Pick” farm you go to that quantities are limited, so the sooner you can go to opening day, the better, to ensure they won’t be closed for the season before you get there.

I personally visited a tulip farm, and I was pleasantly surprised by how big it was, and the variety of tulips there were to pick from.

The next day, when I looked at my bouquet, the flowers were blooming and created such a beautiful display.

There were so many different colors to choose from. I started off sticking with a certain color scheme, but I quickly noticed myself picking out all different colors for a really eye-catching bouquet of flowers.

We were given a bucket to hold our tulips upon entry, and then were off to scour the farm for the best flowers to pick.

I would plan about an hour to an hour and a half for this activity. I would suggest taking a walk around the farm before you start picking flowers to make sure you know what you want to pick before you pull it out of the ground. Once you pull it out of the ground, it’s yours to keep, so be certain you love the flower you pick before you choose it.

If you want to stick with a color scheme, you could always separate your flowers into two separate vases.

Once we had all of our flowers picked out, they were wrapped up for us and ready to take home. The instructions I was given at the farm we went to was to allow the flowers to sit in the bouquet for about two hours, and then put them in a vase of ice water. I was also told to keep the flowers out of the direct sunlight.

The next day, when I looked at my tulips in the vase, they were beautifully blooming and full.

This is an activity I would absolutely recommend and would 100% do again. I can’t wait to pick strawberries next!
